Toronto the Tolerant

Tired of watching Seinfeld reruns, I get my weekly comedy fix by tuning in to the antics of Toronto City Hall. The latest was the drubbing councillor Rob Ford took from Shelly Carroll, the mayor and last but not least the media. If this was a football game there would have been flags all over the field, for piling on.

From what I saw on CTV he got himself into a verbal pickle over the use of the term “Oriental” versus “Asian” and made things worse by trying to justify himself. It was clear he meant no disrespect but was just attempting to get a point across. The bigger faux pas was the budget chiefs’ assertion that “Orientals are carpets, Asians are people” quoting from comedian Margaret Cho.

Then I read Mayor Miller talking about sanctions and the need to apologize to council which I felt no need, he already apologized publicly if anyone was offended. It takes a big man to apologize when making a mistake and a bigger man to stand his ground when further apologizes are not required. Then there was all this talk about sensitivity and tolerance in multicultural Toronto.

Back to the bigger blunder. At first I thought it was odd yet funny, the use of a comic to illustrate the difference between Asian and Oriental. Then I thought I should learn more about her and check out some of her material.

Her vagina monologues are just that. Monologues about vaginas. And whos’ vaginas are we talking about? Not only her own, but vaginas that belong to some very prominent people.

Is the following video Torontos’ benchmark for tolerance and sensitivity?

Margaret Cho- “Laura Bush’s Pussy Tastes Like Lysol”
